I think there’s such a thing as abusing your right to vote in order to “act out” without it being radical enough to directly change your day to day life. People are contradictory beings and will vote for a party that they know is harmful or outrageous because they’re bored, because covertly supporting such a party is a fun secret to have and because openly supporting a party that is controversial will give them attention, even if it’s negative.
People delight in the cruelty of delaying a better world as a form of entertainment. The democracy is a joke to me, being actively engaged in it would mean losing my mind because it is insanity. There is no reason to it. I’m sure deep down we are all good beings and know that policies which are kind and humane come closest to the world God intended for us. I do vote, but I’m detached from the outcome of the voting.
There is no winning or losing, really. It’s a matter of staying true to yourself and staying true to God. I myself try to uphold those values no matter what party wins.
I wrote this piece for the podcast of my dear friend Marc von der Linde who studies Philosophy in Mainz. We wrote short stories in the basement of the UGent together and followed a course on Sexual and Relational Ethics. He asked me what my thoughts were on democracy. I thought it might be relevant in general.
